Opportunity to become a pilot site for draft asthma guideline
NICE are running a project to help with the development of the guideline on asthma diagnosis and monitoring. At consultation stage, various concerns were raised about the practicality of implementing the proposals in the draft guideline. As a result, they are field testing aspects of the draft guideline, in order to learn how best to introduce the recommended approaches to diagnosis and monitoring of asthma.
We think that testing out the proposals in real world settings will be really useful in order to explore issues around feasibility, training, workload, time required and cost. The pilots will focus on how spirometry can be used as the primary diagnostic test for people of all ages who may have asthma, and how FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) can be introduced as a routine diagnostic tool. In the survey that we conducted with our members in March 2015, these were the areas of greatest concern from an implementation perspective.
Involvement in a project of this kind could be an important learning experience for you and contribute towards your revalidation portfolio. Accredited training in quality assured spirometry will be fully funded, as will FeNO equipment and training.
It is anticipated that the project will start in March 2016, with sites implementing the recommended pathway (including diagnostic tests and algorithms) and collecting data for the 6 month period May-October 2016.
