All schools, teachers and school nurses have a responsibility to keep children safe and well. 

As reported in the National Review of Asthma Deaths: What did we learn and what needs to change? by Dr Mark Levy, 28 children and young people died from asthma during the review - equivalent to losing an entire classroom.

We know that when it comes to pupils with diabetes or severe allergies, everyone is prepared and knows what to do. But can the same be said for young students with asthma?

In this webinar we will discuss:

  • The responsibilities you have when dealing with children with asthma
  • Management plans - what they are, how to understand them, and how to best utilise them

  • Ren Lawlor

She is the clinical educator and academic tutor lead for the South East London Training Hub and a visiting lecturer for various universities including University of Greenwich and De Montfort University. Ren is the vice chair for the PCRS executive committee and is chair of the PCRS education committee and co-clinical lead for PCRA.

She specialises in caring for people with long term conditions including asthma and COPD. Recently, Corinne has taken on the additional role of Children and Young People’s Asthma Lead for Herefordshire and Worcestershire Integrated Care Board. She is excited to have been given the opportunity to raise the profile of asthma and to support improvements in asthma care in partnership with the local community

    Viv has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and has worked in acute paediatrics, school nursing, specialist nursing, clinical education and research.
    Viv's primary professional interest is the improvement in quality of life and outcomes for children and young people with asthma and she is proud to have collaborated with NHSE in the development of the CYP asthma capability framework. Viv is the Clinical Lead for CYP Asthma Transformation in the Black Country and in her other role as the facilitation coordinator for the IMP²ART Trial Viv works with the research team and GP practices to deliver a strategy to improve supported self-management of asthma.

    Viv have a number of additional professional interests including writing for publication, leadership activity, teaching and developing online asthma courses.

Young people in UK most at risk of dying from asthma

The UK has the highest asthma death rate for young people aged 10-24, compared with other wealthy countries. This is the finding of an international comparison of young people’s health conducted by the Nuffield Trust and the Association for Young People’s Health.
