ARC Webinar Series 2021: The Journey Begins with the Right Diagnosis

Getting the right diagnosis for our patients with asthma can take time but it is so important that we get it right from the outset. A correct diagnosis ensures the correct treatment can be started, the response to treatment measured, and supported self-management implemented from the word go.

For clinicians, just as if we are setting off on a journey, we need to equip ourselves with the right tools and knowledge to ensure we start the patient off on the right path, guide them away from the pitfalls, take a break if needed i.e. when treatment doesn't seem to be working, reassess and maybe even go back to the beginning and start again. We may only be with our patients for very short chunks of time, sometimes less than 10 minutes, so we need to be able to ensure that the key messages of basic asthma care are delivered in this timeframe ensuing that they know which path to take and which to avoid. 

In the first of our new series of insightful webinars, GP Katherine Hickman will share how we can get our patients on the right path from the word go.

Speaker: Dr Katherine Hickman

Katherine qualified from Leeds University in 2000. She originally did a Medicine Rotation acquiring her MRCP before settling into General Practice. She is a GP Partner in Bradford. Over the years Katherine has developed a keen interest in Respiratory medicine and is Respiratory Lead for West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership. She also works extensively with the Priamry Care Respiratory Society. Outside of work Katherine spends most of her time running around after her three small children. She also enjoys cooking and baking and has recently rediscovered her love for singing and joined a choir.

After starting her career as a staff nurse in an acute and high dependency respiratory ward Nicola found her passion for respiratory medicine and undertook a masters degree in long term conditions. She moved into specialist respiratory medicine as a clinical nurse specialist participating in pulmonary rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, oxygen assessments, and supporting ward staff in the management of respiratory patients. Inspired to take action earlier and prevent as many late diagnosis and emergency admissions as possible she then moved into primary care working as a practice nurse before qualifying as an ANP. Today she retains special interest in respiratory delivering updates in-house and externally and supporting the wider community of health care professionals through helping to run the South Yorkshire Respiratory Interest Group (SYRIG) locally and acting as vice chair to the PCRS conference organising committee. She is ARTP qualified in both interpretation and performance of spirometry.
